Our Successful Test Building Web Site Traffic
It's not rocket science. The secret to successful search marketing and web site traffic is to build up your web site's page count. Sure, it also helps to know how to structure the code and link the pages together, but without a large site, one simply cannot compete anymore.
Connweb is a Connecticut-based business that was founded in 1997, but for nine years we relocated to Virginia from 2003 to 2012. During our stay there, we operated under the domain vahost.net. Our last full year there, we decided to use the vahost.net site as an experiment. We had long told our customers that the secret to search engine success was to build up the size of one's web site, but (sadly) we had not been practicing what we preached. Finally, we decided that we could not in good conscience continue to preach without proving that it actually works successfully.
So in November 2010, we went to work. At the time, the site was 18 pages in size. Over the next nine months, we increased the page count to 35 pages, almost doubling the size. We also tracked the traffic numbers both before and during the test period, to see what the impact was. We did not do anything else...no social networking, no paid advertising, etc. The only other thing we added to the site during that time was videos, and we did that as we added new pages. The test was very successful.
The results were impressive. As you can see via the graph at top-right, our web site traffic averaged 327 unique visitors per month to the site during 2010, as shown by the red part of the trend line, and that average held fairly consistent throughout 2010, despite one period in the late Spring and early Summer where traffic levels actually dipped.
Once we started adding pages, however, traffic levels took off in late 2010, and they grew very consistently throughout 2011, as shown by the blue part of the trend line. The average monthly unique visitor count increased to 592, and for half 2011 it averaged 675 per month.
