What Is Website Design?

Website design is the process by which a look-and-feel for a web site is created, developed, and applied to pages of the site. Most website design is done for a new web site, although some web site owners like to get a new design periodically in order to give it a face lift. While this is generally not strictly necessary when it comes to search marketing, it can be useful if the site is not effectively converting the traffic it receives.

When planning your own web site design, there are a number of things you should keep in mind. First and foremost is that it is impossible for any designer to guarantee they will come up with a design you'll like on the first try. At Connweb, we actually have a pretty good track record on this, but even we cannot always accurately gauge the client's tastes on the first attempt. So when you engage a designer, whether it is us or someone else, you should be prepared to go through multiple designs with feedback from you after each attempt before the right design is found for you.

As many other designers do, we approach website design by providing a series of "mock-ups". A mock-up is an artist's rendering of what a sample page of the new site will look like. It contains no working links or features and in many cases includes only generic text in place of the real text that will finally appear on the page. In some cases, we simply draw horizontal lines arranged on top of each other going down to indicate where the text will go, so that the grouping of lines is shaped like paragraphs of text.

We normally contract with our clients to do a minimum of three mock-ups up-front. After the first mock-up, we get feedback from the client, then use that feedback to inform our ideas about the second mock-up. We similarly do the same kind of thing with the third. By this point, one of the three is almost always attractive enough to the client that we can make it the basis of the website design.

One of the key elements of a successful website design is the use of a color scheme. Most clients have some idea of what colors they want us to use. It's a good idea to let your designer know about your color preferences right up front. The earlier in the website design process that we know the color scheme you prefer, the greater the likelihood we will come up with a "look" that you like.
